This summer, we want to know what happened to the people who helped us create and shape the PostDoc Office.
Today: Dorian Jano. We remember Dorian fondly, because he joined the first writing retreat, alongside a lot of brilliant Southeast European studies scholars, who were in general just a joyful community to interact with.
1) Where are you today and where did you work during your time in Graz?
I’m currently a Postdoctoral Researcher on the ERC SolRoutes project at the University of Genoa and also a Jean Monnet Lecturer at the University of Amsterdam. During my time in Graz, from 2020 to 2022, I was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Southeast European Studies. That period was instrumental in shaping my academic path.
2) What is your advice on how to make good career decisions and be satisfied in your work life?
Career advice is always personal, and there’s no universal formula. In my experience, finding a balance between professional growth and personal satisfaction is an ongoing challenge. Focusing too much on career advancement can sometimes make our daily work less fulfilling, while prioritizing work satisfaction might slow professional progress. The key is to find a balance that works for you, and that balance often shifts depending on your goals, opportunities, and stage in life. One of the most rewarding ways for me to bridge that gap has been securing research funding and competitive fellowships. These not only support career development but also provide a sense of independence and purpose.
3) What's a memory of University of Graz that stands out in your mind?
I have many warm memories from my time at the University of Graz, but the writing retreat stands out the most. It was a perfect blend of reflection, community, and productivity. We were guided by a brilliant coach, who not only helped us understand the writing process but also encouraged us to reflect on ourselves as writers. The retreat offered a supportive atmosphere, surrounded by supportive colleagues and beautiful landscapes that inspired deep thinking, and it gave me a refreshing break from the usual routine. It was a truly enriching experience, both professionally and personally.
Thank you so much for the interview, Dorian, and for staying in touch!
